EA and BioWare ‘remain committed’ to Mass Effect franchise

Another N7 Day celebration has passed without a significant update for Mass Effect.

Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble has confirmed EA and BioWare remain committed to the franchise, in a blog post celebrating the return of the annual N7 Day celebration. As in past years, the event has been and gone without a significant update for the long-gestating next Mass Effect game – although Gamble has reassured keen players that work continues in earnest.

What’s going on with Mass Effect?

In recent years, rumours have grown around what’s next for the Mass Effect franchise. A new sequel was initially announced in 2020, but there have been very few updates since, beyond hints and teasers included in annual N7 Day announcements.

Compounding the mystery around the game, EA and BioWare have experienced significant challenges over the last few years, which have led many to question whether Mass Effect‘s long gestation is due to company layoffs, or whether EA’s pending sale to Saudi Arabian investors has reshaped future projects.

In his blog, Gamble attempted to allay fears, confirming the franchise’s development team remains hard at work on developing the next game, including its many romances.

BioWare is now focussed ‘exclusively’ on Mass Effect

‘Let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe,’ Gamble said. ‘The truth is, the last few years have been an incredibly busy time at BioWare. But currently, the team is heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect.’

‘We have a lot of universe to cover, lots of features to build, and lots of romances to figure out. We’re excited by what we’re building, and we promise you: when we’re ready, it’ll be a lot of fun to show.’

Beyond the upcoming next game, Gamble also enthused about other projects in the Mass Effect universe, such as Amazon’s live-action series adaptation. BioWare is working ‘closely’ with Amazon to develop the show, and the team is reportedly ‘really excited’ about what’s in the works.

‘The writers room is going strong, and we’ve got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game,’ Gamble said.

He also confirmed that it won’t be a ‘retread’ of Commander Shepard’s story, and will instead explore a ‘brand-new story within the universe’s timeline … set after the original trilogy.’

That’s certainly an intriguing prospect, given that leaves the world of Mass Effect wide open for exploration.

N7 Day did include one major hint for Mass Effect 5

In wrapping up his blog, Gamble did include one clue about what’s next for Mass Effect – that there was a hidden message included within his update. Looking closely, you can spot letters in italics throughout, with these spelling out the world ‘krogan,’ amongst other key phrases.

This could be a major teaser for the plot of the next Mass Effect, suggesting it could focus on the Krogan alien race. But then again, the message is up for interpretation – and with few other clues to go off, we’ll just have to stay patient to see what eventuates.

At this stage, it appears this is it for N7 Day celebrations this year, which may be a disappointment for patient fans. At the very least, we do know EA and BioWare are currently well into development on the next Mass Effect adventure, and that we’ll likely hear more in future.
