Development studio Rebel Wolves has confirmed its long-gestated vampire RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker will launch on 3 September.

Since its announcement, there’s been plenty of intrigue around this upcoming title, most notably for its ties to the Witcher video game franchise.

The Rebel Wolves team comprises veterans who previously worked on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and it appears The Blood of Dawnwalker may have a similar tone and ambitions.

A vampire RPG with plenty of promise

In The Blood of Dawnwalker, you play as Coen, a young man of the 14th century who becomes infected with vampirism during an attack on his village. During the day, he’s a regular human, but by night, the infection overwhelms him and he gains a multitude of vampiric abilities, as well as a need to drink blood.

Not only must he spend his time searching for a cure, he’s also facing another challenge: his family is in danger and he’s on a timeline to save them.

Early previews have revealed a plot and action with plenty of promise, particularly for those looking for something to fill the void before The Witcher 4 arrives.

First look at The Blood of Dawnwalker

As we wrote in our own first look: ‘The Blood of Dawnwalker toes a very distinct line. As protagonist Coen, you are the titular dawnwalker – a human by day, vampire by night, who must chart both worlds to save his family and bring peace to his city. In our early preview, the nature of this duality was well on show, illuminating just how The Blood of Dawnwalker will encompass light and dark in a sprawling, choice-based tale.

‘What’s unique about this upcoming RPG is that time is a currency that is tracked and monitored. As you roam a vast open world, you’ll come across all sorts of folks, many with quests to offer. Some of those quests come with a warning – an hourglass, followed by a number.

‘You’ll learn that if you take on these quests, time in the world of Dawnwalker will advance incrementally, with days being added to a set timeline. Coen only has a certain number of days to save his family, so you’ll need to carefully monitor which quests you take on, and how far the timeline advances.’

ScreenHub: The Blood of Dawnwalker preview – oozes with vampiric charm

Another novel twist is The Blood of Dawnwalker operates on a day-night cycle, with certain quests changing depending on which time of the day you choose to initiate them. Coen has access to human abilities during the day (walking in the sunlight, conversing with citizens) and vampire abilities by night (a more off-putting appearance, sharp claws, night vision). These define his interactions, and how he can solve particular mysteries.

The duality makes for a very interesting set-up, and we’re certainly keen to see how it evolves during the adventure.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is set to launch for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on 3 September.
