Our understanding of convergence is changing – it’s now about broader ideas of influence in a networked society, said Richard Bean, Deputy Chair of the Australian Communications & Media Authority, at the start of the Broadcasting Summit on Wednesday.

After introducing ACMA’s brand-tagline: “Communicating, Facilitiating, Regulating” – but not necessarily in that order, he said – , Bean showed the organisation’s introductory reel, in which a the traditional corporate/documentary “voice of God” explained that ACMA operated from outer space to the depths of the ocean and from Burnie to Broome, and dealt with everything from child safety on websites to allocating phone numbers. A broad canvas indeed, as Bean admitted.
