The Ghost of Emerald Hill

Genre: Historical Drama / Socio-Political Thriller

Driven into political exile from occupied Ireland, brilliant young scholar Edmund Finn arrives in the raw, town of mud and tents 1840 Melbourne.

Fueled by a fierce intellect and an unyielding hatred for colonial tyranny, Edmund secures a role as editor at The Port Phillip Herald, owned by his loyal friend George Cavanagh.

Together, they transform The Herald from a colonial mouthpiece into a a top selling newspaper and a sharp weapon for social justice.

Operating under the famous pen name “Garryowen,” Edmund wages a relentless crusade against the “gilded ruffians” the corrupt syndicate of magistrates, squatters and land speculators erasing the noble indigenous peoples.

His crusading pen exposes legal ineptitude, blows the whistle on institutional corruption, and records the systemic violence and erasure inflicted upon the dispossessed Wurundjeri people.

To the marginalised public, Garryowen is an anonymous folk hero; to the ruling elite, he is a dangerous agitator targeted with endless libel suits, steep fines, and threats of imprisonment.

As the physical and legal pressure mounts, Edmund’s crusade becomes a psychological pressure cooker. He is haunted by supernatural visitations from three historical figures: Irish Liberator Daniel O’Connell, moral philosopher Rabbi Moses, and his late wife Annie. These spectral presence push him to the brink of obsession, compelling him to write a definitive history before his own failing health cuts his mission short.

Edmund risks his freedom, his sanity and his life to publish a two-volume masterpiece, The Chronicles of Early Melbourne – immortalising the unvarnished truth of a city built on stolen land and hidden corruption.
