The 2022 Academy Award nominations have been released overnight, with many Australian names among the coveted nods.

This year heralds the 94th run of the Academy Awards, which will honour films released in 2021, and the winners will be announced on 27 March, live from the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center.

Australians nominated

Nicole Kidman is up for Best Actress for her portrayal of Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos. She’s up against the equally fantastic talents of Jessica Chastain, Olivia Colman, Penélope Cruz – and Kristen Stewart in her first Oscar nom ever. Kidman recently won the Golden Globe in this category, which is usually a good indication of which way the Oscars will swing.

Kodi Smit-McPhee is up for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Jane Campion’s much-talked-about The Power of the Dog. Smit-McPhee plays shy teenager Peter, an outcast on a Montana cattle ranch in the 1920s. He’s up against co-star Jesse Plemons, as well as renowned character actor J.K. Simmons. Smit-McPhee also nabbed the Golden Globe for this performance, so it’s a strong bet he’ll be awarded the Oscar as well.

Meanwhile Australian/UK film & TV production company See-Saw Films is celebrating The Power of the Dog receiving a whopping 12 nominations.

Australian cinematographer Ari Wegner is among those nominations, making history as the second female DOP (Director of Photography) in history to be nominated for Best Cinematography.

‘It has been an incredible privilege to work with Jane Campion on The Power of The Dog,’ said Emile Sherman, Producer and Co-founder of See-Saw Films. ‘She is a visionary director and one of the world’s finest filmmakers. Her artistry and graceful command of this story can be seen in every frame of the film and we are so grateful to The Academy for recognising it with 12 nominations. We are equally thrilled for Jane to receive her first ever Best Picture nomination and we are so proud of our incredible ensemble of cast and crew, including those nominated today.’

‘See-Saw has collaborated with Jane since 2009 and we are honoured to have worked alongside her for so many years. Thank you to our fellow producers and also to Netflix for being such incredible partners on this journey with us.’
