Recently, there’s been much news of deals between Chinese and overseas companies that will, sooner or later, lead to co-production activity. Now the money’s in the bank, China’s government is putting the brakes on.

The government’s State Administration for Radio, Film & Television (SARFT) has this week criticised companies hoping to skirt the country’s cap on foreign films. SARFT Deputy Chief Zhang Piming has been reported in Chinese media that foreign companies have not been satisfying their obligations on co-production deals for films (which are guaranteed a domestic Chinese release on more favourable terms than foreign films admitted under the capped quota scheme).
