PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures have confirmed that the in-development film adaptation of the video game Helldivers will star Jason Momoa, presumably in the lead role, as a warrior tasked with defending Super Earth from alien creatures.

The film is set to be directed by Justin Lin, most known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise, and it’s set to arrive in theatres on 10 November 2027.

What we know so far about the Helldivers film adaptation

For now, we know very little about what’s planned for the adaptation of Helldivers but there’s certainly rich source material to draw from.

In the overarching narrative of the game, players control elite soldiers tasked with defending Super Earth ‘from hordes of alien creatures, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. It’s often been compared to the blockbuster film Starship Troopers, with a similar action-comedy tone and thread of commentary about the state of politics and the world.

The first Helldivers, released in 2015, was a significant hit, but it was the 2024 sequel Helldivers 2 that really cemented the franchise as a major property for PlayStation. As of October 2025, the game had reportedly sold around 19 million units.

It’s this success that’s inspired its optioning for film, alongside an array of other popular PlayStation adventures.

All the big PlayStation Productions adaptations in the works

This upcoming Helldivers adaptation is one of many PlayStation Productions titles in the works. Horizon, Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima and Gravity Rush have all reportedly been optioned for major adaptations in future, with many of these projects having been in development for years.

There’s also Prime Video’s God of War adaptation in development, which is a co-production with PlayStation Productions, Sony Pictures and other parties.

The sheer number of adaptations can be explained by a simple factor: video game adaptations are hot property right now. With major releases like A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie becoming notable box office successes, and recent TV series like The Last of Us and Twisted Metal gathering passionate audiences, appetite for new adaptations is strong.

While quality varies across recent, successful adaptations, there are high hopes for Helldivers and its potent relevancy in the current economic climate. With Jason Momoa and Justin Lin on board, it appears the film is now shaping up. We’re likely to hear further developments in the months to come.

In the meantime, those keen to see more of Jason Momoa will have plenty to occupy themselves with over the next two years. He’s set to appear in Supergirl next, as intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, and he’ll also appear as Blanka in the 2026 Street Fighter film adaptation, alongside Noah Centineo, 50 Cent, Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, David Dastmalchian and more.

2025 was not a banner year for video game movie adaptations. A Minecraft Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 were both hugely financially successful but they weren’t exactly critical darlings, and the Until Dawn movie failed to make a splash either way. But 2026 is a different story.

This coming year there are eight video game-to-film adaptations on the release schedule, some of them with real potential. Here are all the game adaptations coming to screens next year, and some thoughts on which ones might be worth watching.
