HBO Max has officially picked up the exclusive Australian streaming rights for Make That Movie, a new comedy series created by Australian comedian Sam Campbell (Taskmaster, Last One Laughing UK) and starring Campbell and fellow Aussie comedian Aaron Chen (Fisk, Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee).

The series, directed by Joe Pelling (Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared), focuses on a director who recruits everyday people to turn their ideas into feature films across a three-day span.

Sam Campbell stars as a heightened version of himself, leaning into ideas of auteur filmmaking. He’s joined by Aaron Chen as intimacy co-ordinator Sebastian, Helen Bauer (Am I Being Unreasonable?) as sound engineer Pat, and David Hargreaves (This Country) as cinematographer Winnie.

Make That Movie is a Channel 4 production, commissioned by Charlie Perkins, Head of Comedy, and Joe Hullai, Commissioning Executive. BBC Studios will handle global sales, while HBO Max has secured the rights to streaming within Australia – likely on the strength and appeal of Sam Campbell’s work.

Sam Campbell’s star is rising

Campbell has made a name for himself within Australia and overseas while recently working in the UK, starring on a variety of shows, while also hosting solo stand up.

From winning the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Award in 2018, to earning the main prize at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in 2022, Campbell has solidified himself as a notable talent. He’s earned an audience with his unique, off-kilter and awkward style, with impressive showings across various guest spots on popular Channel 4 shows.

Campbell is likely best known for appearing on Series 16 of Taskmaster in 2023, competing against comedians Julian Clary, Lucy Beaumont, Sue Perkins and Susan Wokoma.

Most recently, Campbell appeared as a contestant on the second season of LOL: Last One Laughing UK, a competitive comedy show where comedians must attempt to make their fellows laugh without breaking themselves. Campbell was the final contestant alongside David Mitchell, only losing on a technicality – Mitchell made more people laugh over the course of the show.

Fellow Australian comedian Aaron Chen, also starring in the show, is another rising star of the global comedic circuit. Since winning the 2012 Class Clowns awards at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, he’s gone on to star in a range of Australian TV shows, including Fisk, Drunk History Australia, Thank God You’re Here and Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee, and he was a highlight of Taskmaster Australia‘s third series.

We look forward to seeing Campbell and Chen, and their talented co-stars, in Make That Movie when it lands on HBO Max in Australia in May.
