First look at Fable gameplay shows off chicken kicking, and more

Playground Games is gearing up for the release of Fable in 2026.

The first major gameplay trailer for Playground Games’ Fable reboot has been revealed during the latest Xbox Developer Direct. It’s confirmed a planned release window of Autumn 2026 [Northern Hemisphere] and given a first look at combat, exploration, and early story beats.

It’s the most insightful showcase we’ve had yet, and there were plenty of compelling tidbits to convince newcomers and those keen to see a successor that pays homage to the original games.

Fable‘s character customisation and combat options look diverse

As revealed in the Xbox Developer Direct, Playground’s take on Fable aims to replicate the light-hearted tone of its predecessors, pairing slapstick humour with darker notes.

As the tale begins, you are a child in the village of Briar Hill, roaming freely and without a care in the world.

You can customise your character as you like, so you’re not stuck as the game’s default character, seen so far in trailers and key art.

Soon after the game kicks off, a dramatic event unleashes your inner Hero – but your powers are not enough to save your family and friends from being turned to stone by a mysterious villain.

Fable follows your quest to harness your abilities, and use them to save the world from darkness.

You can wield a sword and other weapons in this quest, but most notably, you can also use magic. One of your spells actually lets you turn enemies into chickens temporarily, and then kick them, which really does feel like classic Fable antics.

The iconic Fable morality system is back

Beyond revealing a first look at combat and customisation, the new deep dive look at Fable also confirmed the franchise’s morality system will return, with a few twists. As explained, players will lean towards good or evil (and be shaped by these decisions) based on their actions, and how people perceive them.

‘Our version of morality isn’t a sliding scale – we’ve chosen to anchor this around the actions you do, and specifically the things you do in Albion that are witnessed by at least one other person,’ Ralph Fulton, game director, explained in the latest Xbox Wire blog.

‘So if a person sees you kicking a chicken, you will start to get a reputation as a “Chicken Chaser” – and if enough people see you do it, or you do it a lot, that reputation will become one of the things you’re known for in that settlement. And people will react to you based on what they think about that particular reputation.’

Different characters will also see your actions in different lights, with the ‘unique worldview’ of these NPCs having an impact on your moral alignment.

Fable will leave aside franchise canon for a fresh start

Another intriguing note revealed in Xbox Wire is that Fable is considered a proper reboot of the original Fable games, and so is not strictly connected to what’s come before.

‘We’ve chosen not to be beholden to the timeline of the original games – the events, the characters – really just to allow ourselves the freedom to build our own Albion and tell our own, new story within it,’ Fulton said.

‘There’s a lot of faithfulness in the way we’ve approached this game – and certainly I think the inspiration of the original trilogy is really clear for everyone to see – but we wanted to make sure that this was a new beginning that would allow us to tell the stories that we wanted to tell.’

While that may be disappointing for some players, as Fulton points out, it’s been many years since the original games, and starting over creates an approachable story and world where everyone can discover something new.

We’ll likely find out more as Playground Games gears up for Fable‘s release on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, later in 2026. Keep an eye out for updates in the coming months.
