Disney now controls 40% of world box office, wants to squeeze exhibitors

In what has been described as “an epochal event in the entertainment business”, Disney has officially closed its US$71 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox. For the first time in over three decades, one of the six major studios has been completely absorbed by another. The Walt Disney Company’s corporate banner now includes images of The Shape of Water, Avatar, Atlanta and The Simpsons, all spoils of war.
