The national broadcasters seem to have abandoned clinical detachment as a way of dealing with passion, and embraced their inner enthusiasts. The traditional ABC commissioning session bounced along with a surprising degree of verve. Louise Pascali maintained her journalistic objectivity and kept copious notes.

Phil Craig, Head of ABC Factual began the session talking about what it is that gets him excited. What he revealed that above the daily grind of proposals, rewrites, edits it was the 8:45 metro ratings email that really gets his day going. There buried in the numbers is the thrill of seeing whether he thought what would or would not work actually resonated with audiences.
