Nosing around this part of the world, it seems that Kiwis didn’t go to the cinema as much as everyone else in 2009.

The US box office was up, a fact much reported as one of the clear signs that America was in the financial toilet in the first half of last year. That and several billion dollars of government bailouts. In times of recession, many people choose to spend their entertainment dollars in cinemas over more costly leisure pursuits. ‘If Hollywood is having a good year, the economy is definitely screwed’ seemed to be the gist of the reporting.
