Australian filmmakers get stamped

Australia Post is honouring film directors this year, with five stamps as part of its Legends Awards.

Australia Post has unveiled a new collection of stamps featuring Australian filmmaking legends.

The five directors chosen are Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet), Peter Weir AM (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Dead Poet’s Society), Warwick Thornton (Samson and Delilah, Sweet Country) Gillian Armstrong AM (Little Women, Starstruck), and George Miller AO (Mad Max, Happy Feet).

The aim of the collection is to highlight Australian contributions to the global film industry. Each director has their headshot featured on new postage stamps as part of the 2022 Australian Legends of Filmmaking stamp issue. They will also get a 24-carat-gold replica of the stamp on which they appear.

‘The films created by our 2022 Legends all tell powerful stories that connect strongly with Australian audiences,’ said Australia Post Group Philatelic Manager, Michael Zsolt. ‘And [they] help to shape our perception of not only ourselves but historical events and important socio-cultural themes’.

Gillian Armstrong, who mentioned she used to collect stamps as a kid, said: ‘It’s wonderful that our film directors are being recognised for the powerfully unique and heartfelt Australian stories that we make – and it is a thrill to be named a Legend of an industry and art form that I’m so passionate about.’
