Walerian Borowczyk first emerged as an animator whose films influenced filmmakers such as Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam. But it was his move to live action films and avant-garde erotic cinema in the seventies that secured Borowczyk’s cult status.
Mixing sex, symbolism, and dreams, films like the erotic portmanteau Immoral Tales (best known, perhaps, for featuring Paloma Picasso appearing as Elisabeth Bathory) and outrageous classic of erotic cinema The Beast became art house classics.
Love Expresstells the story of the director, with contributions from collaborators, commentators, and other filmmakers, including Lisbeth Hummel, Mark Cousins, Peter Bradshaw, Terry Gilliam, Bertrand Mandico, Neil Jordan, David Thompson, and Slavoj Zizek.
What emerges is a fascinating portrait of a visionary filmmaker whose films helped define the changing representation of sexuality in the cinema of the seventies and posed questions about creative freedom.
