Cold War Russia in the early 1980s, and in Leningrad young people are forming bands and performing to seated, almost stoic audiences at an approved venue. But despite the presence of the Iron Curtain the young musicians have an intricate knowledge of punk, rock, and all points in between.
The film, which plays as a quasi-biopic, tells the story of the Viktor Tsoi (co-founder of the group Kino) set over a summer spent with musician Mike Naumenko and his wife Natalia, all played against the background of the Russian underground music scene.
Letoplays as a poignant reminder of the long summers and the endless possibilities of youth, even when curtailed by the state. Topped off with a great soundtrack featuring the like of Talking Heads and Iggy Pop amongst others.
Letois a celebration of youth, music, and the underground scene that existed in Leningrad, but the creativity, relationships, and sense of the ‘scene’ should be familiar to everyone.
Winning awards at Cannes (Soundtrack Award, 2018), European Film Awards, Nika Awards, and others.
