Acid Forest

Australian Premiere

Official Selection: Locarno Film Festival

In Acid Forest filmmaker Rugile Barzdziukaite documents a thin stretch of leafless forest in the Curonian Spit, a 98km long slither of land in the Baltic Sea divided between Russia and Lithuania.

An unlikely tourist attraction, the pine forest is dying as a result of thousands of great cormorants nesting in the trees. But there is something fascinating about the landscape and birds, and the forest is a popular tourist location, with travellers from across the world standing on a raised platform amongst the dying landscape.

Often filmed from the tree tops, Acid Forest offers an absorbing portrait of the forest, the birds, and the tourists who stand and talk amongst the dead trees.

A beautifully realised slow documentary, Acid Forest engages with our cultural fascination with disaster landscapes, ecology, and tourism.

Winner Swatch Art Peace Hotel Award Locarno International Film Festival 2018.
