Minding the Gap

A poignant exploration of masculinity and adolescence through the lens of skateboarding

“A lyrical skateboard ballet when it wants to be and critical introspection amidst the tumult of family and friendship when it absolutely has to be”Indiewire

In his disarming documentary, director Bing Liu turns the camera on himself and his two childhood friends, all of whom have grown up together, bonded by skateboarding. At that awkward stage of life - still teenagers, but also adults - they each have to navigate their own paths into adulthood replete with new relationships, responsibilities and expectations.

With their lives in flux, it becomes clear that skateboarding is an ever-important constant - a form of escape and a way to heal old wounds.

Minding the Gap premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was awarded the special jury prize, and screens exclusively at ACMI.

Screens with a brand new archival short from Australian skate video master Chris Middlebrook.
