2019 Czech and Slovak Film Festival of Australia: On The Roof

Na Střeše

An anti-social retired teacher and a young Vietnamese student reluctantly form a friendship that may just save them both

Join us for the opening night of the seventh Czech and Slovak Film Festival of Australia

Retired teacher Mr Rypar (played with vulnerable humour by Alois Švehlík) is content with his quiet life which he fills by reading the latest edition of his favourite chess magazine and annoying his apartment building’s manager. One night, however, things change. Going up to his building’s roof Rypar comes across Song (Duy Anh Tran), a young Vietnamese student who has escaped from a marijuana den and is on the run from police. The two quickly begin to rely on each other, albeit reluctantly, for different reasons.

In On the Roof, actor-turned-director Jiří Mádl presents an unassuming story of a friendship developing against the odds.

Ticket price includes a Becherovka cocktail upon arrival at the cinema and access to the post-film party with Foreigner Brewing Co on tap, nibbles and live performance from Liptár Folk Dance Group.
