Sky Television confirmed today that agreement has been reached with TVNZ to purchase the broadcast rights for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Under the deal, TVNZ will only be allowed to play newsclips and highlights of the Games. The coverage will be available on Sky’s sport channels, Prime, the Internet and Mobile TV.

According to Radio New Zealand, Sky paid around US$4 million for the rights, understood to be about half the amount TVNZ originally bid. TVNZ decided to part with the rights last September, after assessing that it would lose around $5 million if it went ahead with its planned coverage.
