The Directors’ Workshop

Directing a film is more than just shouting ACTION. This course explores the elements of a film at a director’s disposal – pace, sound, visual image, movement and the actors – and how they combine to best express a story.

Participants will get the chance to direct and experiment with professional actors in the OPENChannel studio, speak to guest directors about their experiences in film and television, and analyse directing conventions and strategies within the constraints of budget, time and creative vision.

The aim of the Directors’ Workshop is to explore the depth and breadth of the director’s role and to give participants access to critically acclaimed and highly skilled directors working in different fields.

The Directors’ Workshop is made up of 4 intensive workshops, each taken by a special guest tutor.

Directing Actors – Tutor: Sue Brooks (dir. Japanese Story)

Sue Brooks’ film, Japanese Story won 7 AFI awards last year and was the only Australian feature film selected for the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. She has worked on the hit ABC series Sea Change and was critically acclaimed for her debut feature film, The Road to Nhill.

Directing Animation – Tutor: Adam Elliot (dir. Harvey Krumpet)

Adam Elliot’s film, Harvie Krumpet is nominated for an Academy Award in the category of animation. His film has already won awards from all over the world, including an AFI in 2003. In 1999 he was awarded Victorian of the Year for his contribution to directing and animation.
