Michael Ebeid is an urbane, patient man who was catapulted from the back room at the ABC seven and a half years ago to lead one of the most battered organisations in the remit of the federal government.

Just one story to illustrate the pressure: his alliance with Chair Joseph Skrzynski, said to be very effective, was broken up when the new Liberal Government refused to renew his contract, even though he is a merchant banker and hardly one of the world’s socialists. He was replaced by Nihal Gupta, a strange appointment who lasted sixteen months, allowing deputy chairman, Dr Bulent Hass Dellal to ultimately be appointed in his place.
