Veteran observational and personal filmmaker Curtis Levy received the highest acknowledgement the community offers, the Stanley Hawes Award for 2018. It will sit neatly on a shelf with his Byron Kennedy Award, received in 2007 from the AFI.

His modesty is a cover for steely determination. He has made a large number of films with Aboriginal people, including The Sons of Namatjira, which contains a shocking scene in which the artist is treated with utter disrespect about money. He fought hard to make The President Versus David Hicks, and campaigned to put the modern Asian political experience on our screens.
