The role of scriptwriting in documentary is a misunderstood affair. How can real life be ‘written’? What good are screenwriting books to a documentarian? Shouldn’t we simply point the camera at a subject and let the story unfold? Many documentary filmmakers don’t write so much as a word post-treatment stage, let alone call on the likes of script editors.
