Image: the publicity keeps foregrounding Tom Hardy, but Charlize Theron drives the main action in the picture.

Mad Max: Fury Road has taken $6.19m on the first weekend running on 540 screens, which means it is now one of those few major films saturating the suburban multiplexes. The word of mouth for the picture is pretty good. Exhibitors judge a film by its average box office per screen, which is $11,400/screen, which is extremely respectable.  The film took US$44.44m in the US market, where it is R rated; here it is on MA 15+.
