CinefestOz has a lot of affection as the richest prize for an Australian feature film. The $100,000 is very handy and the award adds prestige.

It also performs a valuable function by supporting tiny films that deserve a lot more attention. Last year the jury resisted the charms of Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black, the vigour of bikie film 1% and the bucolic comedic fun of The Merger to pick the austere film by Benjamin Gilmour, Jirga. It is set in Afghanistan and is about a repentant soldier.
