Box Office 20 August 2018 – depressed carnivore deep in the Doldrums

Shark movie triumphant? Not exactly. Theory is that it lacks gore because it had to be kept as a PG due to budget.

As the Australian film industry paddles on, reality sneaks up behind…. Image: The Meg and a dog called Pippin.

The Meg ended the weekend a bit underfed. Though it topped the league list, it took only $8243/screen off 413 screens – high of course but not great as tentpole and shark films go. $3.6m in box office.

Blackklansman is at number three, so the Spike Lee film found an audience on its 255 screens, but Universal would not have been surprised that it only did $4,000/screen to harvest $1.16m. Still, for an ideological film that is pretty good and it could have been much worse.
