Free to air television and subscription television have been uneasy competitors for more than five decades.

And while the four UK services with public service responsibilities – the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 – have finally reached an accommodation with BSkyB TV for free carriage on their platform, Free TV Australia has included a proposal that Foxtel pay to carry the free to air services on subscription networks in Australia.
