Ahead of a January 19 2017 release in Australia, The Weinstein Company has popped Lion out on exploratory release in the US. ​In a teeny four ​theatres in Los Angeles and New York, it made US$128,368, averaging US$32,092 per theatre. It was the highest per theatre average on Thanksgiving weekend, and led the arthouse list in raw figures.
