Documentary – favela film at the heart of indy indy

More than any other area of filmmaking, documentary is a nest for wonderfully individualistic filmmakers. Pretty well all the finalists in the Documentary Australia Foundation competition at SFF 2016 are very comfortable working almost alone, accessing resources from their own particular networks. They connect to determined production companies, and take advantage of the thin funding from Screen Australia and the State agencies. The broadcasters are nowhere to be seen.
