The Australian Film Critics’ Association (AFCA) in partnership with ACMI is delighted to present this 1966 cult classic.

Adapted from a best-selling comic novel written by John O’Grady (under the pseudonym Nino Culotta), this tale of post-war immigration was one of the last collaborations between British filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

Established Italian actor Walter Chiari plays a hapless Italian migrant who finds that life in his new country is not quite what he expected. Overcoming many obstacles (such as understanding Aussie slang), he makes new friends and falls for one of the locals.
