The Education Residencies provide an opportunity for Tasmanian artists to focus on their practice in an educational environment working alongside teachers and students. Residencies build young people’s capacity to engage with the Arts whilst enhancing student social health and well-being, and allowing artists to inspire, re-connect or introduce teachers to new ideas and approaches.
The residencies will be offered in selected Department of Education secondary schools and independent schools in the north, north west and south of the state between February and July 2020.
Calls for Expressions of Interest were invited from schools statewide to participate in the program over a three-year period. Schools are selected from this pool each year and matched after the artists have been selected.
Artists commence residencies: Mid-February 2020
Notification for each round will occur within six weeks of the closing date.
Who can apply?
Applicants must meet Arts Tasmania’s general eligibility requirements.
Artists working in schools are required to hold a Working with Vulnerable People card. It is the responsibility of the artist to cover the any costs associated with this card. For more information go to: www.justice.tas.gov.au/working_with_children/application
It is a condition of the artist’s agreement that they comply with the Australia Council for the Arts’ Protocols for Working with Children in Art (www.australiacouncil.gov.au/funding/children-in-art-protocols) as well as any relevant laws as they exist in the State of Tasmania.
Artists are required to carry Public Liability Insurance Cover for a minimum of $10 million. Evidence of insurance cover will need to be provided with the signed funding deed.
What can I apply for?
Your proposal should outline your practice, what you intend to do, and how you envisage interacting with the school community. This could include open studio practice, collaborative projects, workshops, conversations and presentations. Artists should indicate the impact that their residency will have on the school community and their practice.
The Education Residencies do not require artists to work on specific projects for the school or teach students directly.
Artists will undertake a three day program of professional development that supports their 30 day residency, including a program induction, a school induction, supervision and support from appointed school staff, and access to other artists working in similar settings to support their development. Travel costs will be covered by Arts Tasmania for artists travelling from the north or north west to attend the induction and closing day sessions.
The timeframe for the residency will be negotiated between each artist and the selected school and could range from an intensive period of six weeks through to working two and a half days a week for 12 weeks.
How much can I apply for?
Four residencies of $10 000 will be available.
This fee covers all artist fees and costs associated with the residency.
Applicants indicate their preferred region (north, north west or south) in their application, but may be recommended for a residency in another region. Additional funding may be offered to assist with the artist’s out-of-area costs.
If a successful artist for the north west residency lives outside of the region, they will also receive:
- a contribution towards living expenses
- accommodation provided by the school for the duration of their residency.
