Master of Arts Screen: Editing

FAST-TRACK YOUR CAREER IN THE GLOBAL SCREEN INDUSTRY

The Master of Arts Screen: Editing provides you with the opportunity to immerse yourself in the craft of editing. You will be developing the craft of making cohesive moving stories to industry standard using Avid Media Composer. You will learn to work closely in teams, collaborating with the directing, writing, producing, sound, and music students to bring your projects to life.

You will discover how to shape an actor’s performance and structure a scene to enhance the effectiveness of the narrative. In documentary editing, you will face the challenge of working with archival as well as shot footage and threading it together seamlessly.

You will learn about coverage, continuity, and the entire post-production workflow, from transcoding rushes, to online conforming, grading, sound, music, and complex VFX.

A range of scholarships are available to successful applicants of the Master of Arts Screen; you will be prompted to apply for them following your submission.

IS THE MASTER OF ARTS SCREEN: EDITING RIGHT FOR YOU?

WHY DO THIS COURSE

You will experience the pressures and rewards of being a screen editor. You will collaborate with a range of key creatives from every department, and learn about working with editing assistants and post-production supervisors.

By the end of the course, you will have developed the skills to edit professional projects and the confidence to approach professional directors and producers for work. You will develop a high-level reel to showcase your work, and you will gain valuable industry contacts.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Industry practitioners will contribute to the coursework program, providing insights into the craft of editing. You will collaborate intensely with fellow Master of Arts Screen students in small cross-disciplinary groups. In your second year, you will work collaboratively on the creation of major projects using AFTRS facilities and a strategically aligned research project. During the course, there will be an opportunity for a professional placement, which aims to support your transition into the industry upon graduation.

Overall, the course will allow you to consider who you are as a creative practitioner with an adaptable skill set. Learning to analyse your process through the development of a practice-based research project, you will understand how your practice is informed by the past – but also how it engages with contemporary screen culture and emerging trends and technologies.
