Setting Sun Film Festival

You must read the Submission Guidelines before you pay and enter your film through FilmFreeway. If you have any problems with the submission process, please contact the office. Entry fees: $40.00 for adults, $25 for secondary students, $65 for feature-length films. Please Film Freeway charges a small  administration fee and that the entry fee is listed in US dollars.

CATEGORIES

Feature: We’re looking for an Australian made independent feature film to premiere, (drama or documentary, any genre) to premiere at the Sun Theatre Yarraville during the festival. The premiere will be followed by a filmmaker Q and A. We’ll host.  To be considered a feature length film, your film must be at least 60 minutes long and  have at least 51% Australian financing, and preferably not have had a Victorian screening, if so it must be limited. Please contact the office to discuss.
Short Films: Australian and International. All genres.  
Best Film By A Female Director: The international female filmmakers’ program, The Rouge, was introduced in 2015 to boost female filmmaking. The winner will receive $1000. 
Best Emerging Filmmaker: must be a tertiary filmmaking student or under 25 years of age
Secondary Student: Rising Sun program.  This program is incredibly popular. We play the best films in a free program at the Sun Theatre

Best Feature Film (length) A free screening in a Sun Theatre cinema. Will include marketing, promotion, limited seating and a Q & A after the film’s screening. 
Best Film West (Shot in the West or made by a Westie)
Best Short Documentary 
Best Emerging filmmaker (under 25)
Best Film People’s Choice
Best Cultural Diversity (A film of any genre highlighting, exploring, promoting themes related to disability, gender identity, sexuality, religion, race, age, culture, language)
Best Indigenous Achievement
Best Animation
Best Comedy
Best Secondary 
Best Acting Performance                                                                                                                                                                 

Prizes for 2021 are still being determined. Prizes cannot be redeemed for cash and must be collected from the festival within two weeks of the festival ending or be forfeited. Prizes are only available to Victorian filmmakers and not redeemable for cash. 

Judging 

Films will be judged and the finalist/winners announced on the website prior to the festival starting. The judges are a small group of media and film teachers, and industry professionals experienced in judging and making films. The finalists and winners in each category will listed on the website.

Films must be no longer than 20 minutes from opening to closing credits. Films made from the 1st December 2017 – 31st January 2021 can be entered until midnight 31st January, 2021. Films cannot be entered after this date without approval.
