The organising committee of The SYDNEY SCIENCE FICTION FILM FESTIVAL (SSFFF) has officially opened submissions for the 2021 event. This year’s festival will return to the state-of-the-art ACTORS CENTRE AUSTRALIA venue in Sydney’s inner-west and expand the program to run over two weekends, from November 4-13.
“The response to our first festival from both the global filmmaking community and Sydney’s science-fiction fans was beyond our wildest dreams,” says Festival Director Simon Foster. “It was not a tough decision to expand the 2021 festival, both in terms of screening sessions and sundry festival events.”
Last years’ four day fest has grown into seven, upping the session count from seven to 15. Also added in 2021 is a two-night midweek academic program, to explore the broader context of science-fiction in society.
“We haven’t been quiet over the summer months,” says Foster, citing the partnership with the Berlin Sci-Fi Filmfest and the subsequent German Sci-Fi Showcase event held in February as part of the SSFFF’s year-round endeavours. “The planning we’ve done for the 2021 festival will be reflected in our strengthened commitment to filmmakers, both local and international, and an enhanced festival experience for the audience.”
Key 2021 dates to diarise are:
June 6 - Earlybird Deadline
August 15 - Regular Deadline
September 5 - Late Deadline
September 26 - Extended Deadline

In 2020, the SSFFF screened works from 19 countries, with Best Film honours going to SCALES, from UAE, and the short THE FABRICATED, from Iran. Also amongst the winners circle were unique speculative visions from Japan (RYOKO’S QUBIT SUMMER); France (ANONYMOUS ANIMALS); Spain (QUEEN OF THE LIZARDS); Italy (DARKNESS); and, of course, Australia (MONSTERS OF MAN; STARSPAWN OVERTURE).
