Westwind: Djalu's Legacy

Australian-Belgian multi-instrumentalist Gotye joins forces with Djalu Gurruwiwi to help safeguard the ancient Yolngu songlines

Following our 4pm screening on Saturday 10 March, join us for a Q&A with Djalu Gurruwiwi's grand daughter, Leila Gurruwiwi (Marngrook Footy Show), and the film's producer, Kate Pappas.

Djalu Gurruwiwi is a Galpu elder, musician and storyteller. As an internationally revered master of the yidaki (or, didgeridoo), he tours the world sharing Yolngu culture, and in doing so keeps his culture alive.

As Djalu gets older - no one is sure how old he actually is - he will need to find someone to pass on his tribe’s songlines, which contain stories, knowledge and a huge understanding of Country. Without someone to pass the knowledge on to, everything will be lost.

Incorporating music with interviews and animation, this is a celebration of a musician, but also of Yolngu culture, the very thing at stake as western culture encroaches on tradition.
