Quest: A Portrait of an American Family

A moving family portrait and vivid illumination of race and class in America

“Superb. A living, breathing, stunning documentary” - Variety

In North Philadelphia, Christopher “Quest” Rainey delivers newspaper to pay the bills, while his wife Christine’a, aka “Ma Quest”, works at a women’s shelter. Not only that, but the couple’s home music studio also serves as a creative sanctuary from the strife gripping their neighbourhood. Through their joint efforts, the Rainey’s preserve the spirit of hope in a downtrodden community.

Filmed with vérité intimacy over a decade, director Jonathan Olshefski follows the Rainey family’s odyssey through the everyday joys and unexpected crises of life. An essential reflection of life during Barack Obama’s presidency, and all-the-more vital considering the current US political landscape, Quest is a tender depiction of an American family whose journey is a profound testament to love, healing and hope.
