Palmerston North’s Reel Earth festival has announced its 2010 programme. Billed as the Southern Hemisphere’s largest environmental film festival, 10 Kiwi films will screen as part of the programme.
The festival attracted more than 200 submissions from over 40 countries. 78 films were selected, with 18 nominated in the award categories of Short Films (up to 15 minutes); Short Films (15 to 45 minutes); Features; and New Zealand-made.
With 17 films selected overall and 4 award nominations, the US had the most entires after NZ, which some might consider ironic given the festival's theme.
Reel Earth’s sixth season will open with a ‘Green Carpet’ gala night at Palmerston North’s Regent on Broadway Theatre on 22 May when the awards will be announced. Robyn Malcolm will do the honours, MCing the event.
The festival runs to 5 June, followed by a tour of winners and other selected films. Dates and venues for the tour will be announced at the gala opening 22 May.
Reel Earth has also put together a 90 minute programme of festival highlights, which will tour to over 1800 schools nationwide. The programme will be delivered on hard drive, with each screening hosted. Reel Earth key sponsors (Palmerston North City Council, Massey University and Westpac) will fund the schools programme.
