Toronto runs cold but Venice keeps recent interest in Australian festival flicks

With its interest for smaller, challenging work, the Venice Film Festival finds flecks of gold in Australian films. But Toronto?

The great film festivals look at the Australian screen output from distinctively different points of view. Venice has made this trick work really well this year, as it elects to run West of Sunshine in the Orrizonti selection. It claims to investigate ‘a wider view towards new trends in the expressive languages that converge in film.’ The prizewinners have a strongly non-Anglo feel to them.
