Homecooked Comics Festival

Festival Director

Squishface Comic Studio is looking for a volunteer Festival Director to deliver their one day artist market, Homecooked Comics Festival (15th April, 2018 at Northcote Town Hall).

The successful applicant would be supported in their role by Sarah Howell, the previous Festival Director who will take on the role of Festival Development Officer.

Started in 2012 Homecooked Comics Festival is Australia’s longest running independent comic festival. It consists primary of an artist market with a small program of concurrent and satellite events and workshops. The festival prioritises supporting children and young people to exhibit alongside experienced creators.

Details: This position is until 30th September, 2018.

Commencement: February, 2018

Working Hours: 9 hours a week February - April 2018. You must be available for the full day of the festival (Sunday 15th April, Northcote Town Hall). Hours in other months of the year will be 2 hours a week.

Key Relationships:   Work with Squishface Comic Studio members, as well as Sarah Howell. Squishface Comic Studio are in the process of establishing a Steering Committee for the festival and in-time the role of Festival Director will be answerable to the Steering Committee.                    

Fee:  There is no fee for this position. There is the potential to make funding applications to support this role into the future.

Specific duties:

Artistic Programming

Work with Sarah Howell and Squishface studio members to:

  • Draw on the festival and Squishface’s pre-existing artistic networks to source exhibitors (both emerging and established) for the artist market

  • Draw on the festival and Squishface’s pre-existing artistic networks to source talent (both emerging and established) for event programming and staffing  

  • Develop new networks of artists and partner organisations

  • Program and organise (budgets allowing) workshops, performances, comic book launches, artist talks, exhibitions and other special events

Event Logistics

Work with Sarah Howell and Squishface studio members to:

  • Identify the logistic needs of events

  • Liaise with key partner organisations, such as Auspicious Arts Inc and Darebin City Council

  • Prepare media releases and marketing material

  • Prepare risk management documentation

  • Ensure the planned program of events happen on time and within budget

The Organisation

Work with Sarah Howell and Squishface studio members to:

  • Actively seek sponsorship opportunities

  • Develop relationships with funding bodies in Victoria and nationally

  • Plan for the long-term viability and vitality of Homecooked Comics Festival.

Selection Criteria:

The successful applicant will have:

  • A strong interest in the Australian cartooning, illustration and/or writing communities

  • The ability to devise and initiate event ideas

  • The ability to work collaboratively

  • An interest in working with groups, businesses and organisations outside of the arts community. For example the festival has previously had stallholders from a local school and Darebin Library Services held a pop-up library at the festival.

  • Writing skills suitable for developing media releases and grant applications
