Join us in bringing art and people together. Being a volunteer with the 21st Biennale of Sydney offers a rewarding opportunity to discover more about contemporary art and meet new friends.
The Biennale of Sydney is the largest international festival of contemporary art, held every two years in Sydney. Alongside the Venice and São Paulo biennales and Documenta, it is one of the longest running exhibitions of its kind and was the first biennale to be established in the Asia-Pacific region.
Since its inception in 1973, the Biennale has delivered 20 major exhibitions, which have featured more than 1,800 artists from over 80 countries. Most Biennale programs are presented free to the public, with visitation regularly reaching over 600,000 per exhibition.
The Biennale of Sydney values the individual worth, uniqueness and diversity of all people. We seek to remove barriers to participation in our volunteer program that will enable all people to meet their full potential, and experience meaningful involvement with the Biennale.
21st Biennale of Sydney, SUPERPOSITION: Equilibrium and Engagement.16 March - 11 June, 2018
Exhibition Host and Live Interpreter
As an Exhibition Host, you will welcome our visitors to the 21st Biennale of Sydney, and help them to interpret and connect with the artworks through conversation. So that you feel prepared, we will offer a variety of knowledge exchange sessions with Biennale staff and artists in the lead up to the opening, and throughout the exhibition.
As an extension to the Exhibition Host role, you may be interested in signing up as a Live Interpreter (optional). In this role, you will lead the way in introducing small groups of visitors to artworks that require further explanation or activation. As a Live Interpreter, you will delve a little deeper into conversation with visitors about some of your favourite Biennale artworks while gaining confidence in public speaking.
Programs and Learning Host
Learn more about the Biennale Programs and Learning team, by supporting a varied program of tours, talks and activities before and during the exhibition. You will help our visitors to connect and engage with the exhibition, and support Biennale events and education programs. This role will give you an insight into programming for a large scale contemporary art event.
In this dynamic new role, you will focus on providing additional assistance to both visitors and volunteers with access requirements and/or provide language interpretation to speakers of languages other than English.
Depending on your interests and skills, you will have the opportunity to:
- Buddy with volunteers with disability who would like additional support during their shift
- Assist the Programs and Learning team with specialised tours and facilitate sensory engagement of artworks (we will provide some basic training for this)
- If you are able, talk about the artworks, artists and venues in languages other than English, including Auslan.
Visitor Interview Host
Find out more about why people visit the Biennale of Sydney. Assist the Biennale of Sydney and Stollznow Research to collect visitor surveys across our exhibition venues, and learn about audience engagement and visitor motivations. This role will give you the opportunity to gain insight into market research methods and audience engagement, the practicalities and importance of research and reporting to funders, and marketing a large-scale exhibition.
Install and De-install Assistance
As an Artist Assistant, you will provide on-site, hands-on assistance to Biennale artists during the installation of their artwork. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside Australian and International contemporary artists to help create their artworks for the 21st Biennale of Sydney.
Minimum time involved across all roles is 8 shifts, between 16 March and 11 June 2018. Each shift will last between 4-5 hours.
